The Romeo y Julieta Cuban Cigars is named after the tragic young lovers of William Shakespeare. Its origins date back to 1875 and it has become one of the most famous cuban cigars brands in the world. The brand was created by Inocencio Alvarez and Manin Garcia and has gone on to become one of the leaders in the international market. It has been awarded several golden medals in exhibitions such as Antwerp (1885), Paris (1889 and 1900) and Brussels (1897). The cigars brand changed hands in 1897 and the new owner, José Fernández Rodriguez, increased both production and quality. He introduced personalised vitolas for some of his most-valued clients. During his hey-day, no less than twenty thousand different bands were used in production. Rodríguez was a cosmopolitan man and he constantly travelled across Europe and the Americas, actively promoting his brand. One of his publicity tricks was to name his own racing horse after the brand and to take it to important races in Europe. He also opened a shop in the Hotel Capulet in the Italian city of Verona, the place where Shakespeares play, Romeo and Juliet took place. Sir Winston Churchill became a devoted fan of Romeo y Julieta. Since his visit to Havana in 1946, his name has been commemorated on a band and it also serves to describe the marque?s most famous size, the Churchill, measuring 7 inches by 47 ring guage. Romeo y Julieta uses a balanced, aromatic blend of selected leaves from the Vuelta Abajo region. It is a classic, medium-bodied Habano and offers the widest range of totally handmade, long filler sizes in any Habano brand.
