In 1831 a young man, Don José Gener y Bater, emigrated to Cuba from Spain. He was able to secure a modest job working at a tobacco plantation, and as time passed he came to learn much about blending the fine plants to create delicious cigars. Almost twenty years later, Gener conceived the blend for a new line of luxurious
cuban cigars dubbed La Escepción. Don José Gener, who's passion and dedication to the lush Cuban tobacco fields had created one of the finest tasting cigars, took his blend and registered the name Hoyo de Monterrey in 1865.
Translated, Hoyo means “hole” and is aptly describing the deep valleys most suitable for yielding the finest tobacco crops and thus the most delicious cigars.
Hoyo de Monterrey cuban cigars are famous for their distinctive flavor; no other marque captures the silky, rich qualities of a Hoyo de Monterrey. Though vastly complex, these cigars always maintain a perfect balance of pleasant fragrance and sensational flavor. This is why Hoyo de Monterrey is a globally renowned, extremely extravagant stogie.
After Don José's death in 1900, his daughter Lutgarda Gener inherited the trademark and maintined the family owned factory for three decades. Control of both Gener's original La Escepción and Hoyo de Monterrey finally passed to the ever expanding Fernández, Palicio y Cía.
Hoyo de Monterrey cigars are still crafted to the highest quality and have a captivating presence wherever they are smoked. Let buyers beware, Hoyo de Monterreys can make you out to be far more high-class than you probably are... then again, you are smoking a Hoyo!
