In 1935 an up and coming Cuban tobacco mogul, the firm of Menéndez, García y Cña, opted to aquire a premier cigar brand, the coveted H. Upmann
cuban cigars. Once under the firm's direction, the decision was made to release a new line of vitolas dubbed the H. Upmann Montecristo Selection. To the firm's surprise, rather than stimulating further appreciation of the fine H. Upmann marque, demand and popularity for the H. Upmann Montecristo Selection created a market enough for this small line of vitolas to survive on its own.
After several pleas from marketing venues to consolidate the name, Montecristo cigars coined from the torcedores favorite in-house read, The Count of Monte Cristo was introduced. Adorned in yellow and red with swords crossing, the Montecristo line of vitolas soon became a fixture of tobacco markets worldwide.
While the original owners lost control of the marque during the Revolution, the legacy of Montecristo continued to live on; a legacy of producing the most distinguished Cuban cigars.
Montecristo cuban cigars are a name synonymous with the highest quality and consistency in production, quality demonstrated in having one of the Montecristo vitolas, the Montecristo #4, marked as the most popular selling cigar in markets worldwide.
Today the Montecristo has expanded, with five new vitolas introduced during the 1970s and 80s in addition to the original numbered series. All Montecristo Cuban cigars are still handcrafted to the same stringent quality guidlines; delicious, savory, exact and a must have for any true aficionado.
