Dating back to 1834, when it was registered by the Spaniard Ignacio Larraaga, Por Larrañaga Cuban Cigars is perhaps the oldest Cuban cigar brand still producing cigars. The brand "over a century and a half later " still maintains its renown as a producer of quality cigars.

Originally situated at 94 O'Reilly Street in the Cuban capital, the factory then moved to number 713 on the corner of Carlos III and arbol Seco; it is currently located in the La Corona factory. In 1925, Por Larrañaga became the first factory to make machine-made cigars which soon resulted in a boycott by factory workers. By the time of the revolution, Por Larrañaga Cuban cigars had become the sixth-largest Cuban cigar-producing brand.

Up until the 1970s, Por Larrañaga remained a respectable and popular premium Cuban cigar brand. Although production fell during the 1980s and 1990s, the cigars have made somewhat of a comeback in recent years.

In 2006 of a few thousand boxes of Por Larrañaga Lonsdales, a discontinued vitola much-mourned by aficionados, were produced for release in Germany; the cigars were packaged in 25-count dress boxes and marked with a special second band that read "Exclusivo Alemania" (Germany Exclusive). Then later that year Cigar Aficionado's December issue reviewed its first Por Larrañaga outside of its "Connoisseur's Corner". The Petit Corona selected scored an impressive 91.

All Por Larrañaga cigars use tobacco leaves which come from the Vuelta Abajo region, and are made using totally hand-made long-filler and short-filler production methods. Por Larrañaga has earned a reputation for the quality and attractiveness of its presentation.
