The
San Luis Rey cuban cigars brand was first registered in 1940 under the name of Zamora and Guerra. Despite being successful, it disappeared but thanks to a British cigars import company, it reappeared later the same year. The name most likely refers to the town of San Luis in the heart of the Vuelta Abajo tobacco region. This region is particularly famous for the superb wrapper leaves that are produced there. There have also been suggestions that the brand’s name is based on Thorton Wilder’s 1927 popular novel, The Bridge of San Luis Rey.
The brand entered the international market strongly in 1980 and has become a favourite of
cuban cigars connoisseurs worldwide. They have an established market in many countries, including Canada, the Caribbean countries, Mexico, Africa, the Middle East, Switzerland and the Far East.
Leaves from the Vuelta Abajo, Pinar del Rio and also the Semi Vuelta region are used in the cigars’ production. San Luis Rey cigars are renowned for their aroma, slow-burning smooth draw and full-bodied flavor. In fact, these cigars enjoy a reputation amoung cigar- lovers for the intensity of their flavor throughout the range.
Their main vitolas include Churchills, Coronas, Double Coronas and Petit Coronas. All sizes are totally handmade, long filler. Nowadays, the cigars are manufactured in the same factory as where the Romeo y Julieta are made.
