Don Alejandro Robaina is renowned by cigar afficianados everywhere as one of the best tobacco farmers in the Vuelta Abajo region of Cuba. He was born on March 20th 1919 in the municipality of Alquizar. When he was four years old he moved to the country residence of El Pinar in Barbacoa, a municipality of San Luis. He had minimal education and very early on began working next to his father, sowing tobacco.
The Robaina family have farmed tobacco continuously since 1845, on their fields at Cuchillas de Barbacoa. Don Alejandro has become a celebrity in the world of
cuban cigars, with many cigar afficianados and tourists in Cuba flocking to his farm. Each year, eighty per cent of his tobacco harvest is judged fit for use as wrapper leaf for Cuban cigars. Other plantations can only manage a mere thirty-five per cent.
On June 7th 1997 Habanos SA honoured Don Alejandro Robaina by launching a new brand of cigars bearing the name of his famous farmland: Vegas Robaina cigars. He is the only tobacco grower to be honoured in this way and he is pictured on every box. They have quickly gained in popularity and are a tribute not only to his skills, but to those of the entire family.
All five
Vegas Robaina cuban cigars are dressed using wrappers from the Robaina familys farm and are totally handmade, long filler with a medium to full flavor. Although this is a young brand with a small range, the Robaina family pedigree ensures that this is a classic cigar in-the-making. It has an excellent aroma and a fine burn.
